演習題目
ゼミ紹介
This course is designed to contribute a significant body of new knowledge concerning the relationships between Southern European countries and Japan during the 16th and 17th centuries. This objective will be achieved through a meticulous examination of a wide range of primary source documents in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, Latin, and Ladino. By critically analyzing these documents, students will gain the opportunity to reconstruct the historical memories of these encounters, revealing the diverse perspectives and biases that shaped them. The course will go beyond a simple presentation of facts by employing an innovative research approach. This approach will equip students with the necessary skills to identify and analyze the distinct historical periods that informed Southern European knowledge production about Japan during this specific timeframe. By critically examining the methodologies and contexts of these periods, students will gain a deeper understanding of how historical narratives are constructed and evolve over time. Furthermore, the course will delve into the complex interplay between primary sources and historical memory. Students will explore how these documents reflect not only the factual events of the encounters but also the cultural, political, and religious agendas of the authors. This analysis will allow students to deconstruct dominant narratives and uncover alternative perspectives that may have been marginalized or silenced. The extensive use of primary sources in various languages will provide students with a unique opportunity to develop their research skills. They will gain experience in source criticism, paleography (if applicable), and translation, all of which are essential tools for conducting independent historical research. Additionally, the course will foster critical thinking skills by encouraging students to analyze the limitations and biases inherent in historical documents. In conclusion, this course offers a comprehensive and innovative approach to understanding the multifaceted relationships between Southern European countries and Japan during the 16th and 17th centuries.
