演習題目
ゼミ紹介
In this seminar, we will critically examine Japanese cinema in order to understand it in its local and global contexts. We will survey the history as well as the historiography of Japanese narrative film by reading selected texts, and watching/discussing a selection of films. By focussing on articles published in English, we will also gain in impression of how Japanese cinema is being presented, received, discussed, and categorised outside Japan. In addition, we will explore issues in film theory, including gender, national cinema, technology, ideology, etc. and ask whether, and if so how, those theories make sense for the films we are dealing with. By the end of the third year, you will have gained good knowledge of key texts and debates, as well as experience in reading and applying scholarly articles and giving academic presentations. You will have produced several smaller pieces of writing, such as screening reports, and two more substantial analytical essays. All of this lays the ground for your writing and researching your graduation thesis in the fourth year. We will move through the processes of selecting a topic planning and conducting individual research, presentation and discussing your and others’ drafts, and working together towards you submitting a successful thesis.
卒論・卒業研究について
You will choose your own topic for your thesis. You are welcome to write your thesis related to my fields of expertise (see above), but other topics or geographical areas as well as comparative work may be possible, as long as you have a solid grounding in the other area. Please consult with me beforehand.
受講上の注意など
As we will be mainly working in English, a good working proficiency in the language is important. Your abilities will improve over the two years of studying, discussing, and writing, but you must have a solid basis to begin with. Please also schedule a meeting with me before enrolling in the class.
