Combining individual supervision and peer work, we will move through the processes of selecting a topic, planning and conducting individual research, presenting and discussing drafts, until successful completion If you would like to join this seminar, you must take "A Critical Overview of the Japanese Cinema" 1 & 2 in your third year, after which you will have gained knowledge of key texts and debates, as well as experience in reading and applying scholarly articles and giving academic presentations. You will have produced several smaller pieces of writing, such as screening reports, and two more substantial analytical essays. If you have no background yet in film analysis/theory etc., you must also take at least either "Topics in Film Analysis" (first year onwards) or "An Introduction to Film Theory" (third year). Depending on your interests, you are also highly encouraged to take classes in literature, society, history, politics, or courses related to other geographic areas in order to explore possible thesis topics and deepen your understanding of the related backgrounds and discourses. You are always welcome to come in and consult with me about your course choices before joining the seminar in your fourth year. 卒論・卒業研究について
You will choose your own topic for your thesis. You are welcome to write your thesis related to my fields of expertise (see above), but other topics or geographical areas, as well as comparative work, may be possible, as long as you have a solid grounding in the other area. Please consult with me beforehand.
受講上の注意など
As we will be mainly working in English, good working proficiency in the language is important. Your abilities and confidence will improve over the year of studying, discussing, and writing, but you must have a solid basis. Please also schedule a meeting with me before enrolling in the class. I am not holding an official 'zemi annai' meeting, so please just talk to me after class, or schedule an appointment via email.
