Understanding Cross-cultural Issues of Collective Memory: The "History Issue" in East Asia
 
授業の目標   
このコースにおいて、学生は集団記憶といわゆる「歴史問題」の様々な側面について学びます。グループディベートを通し、学生たちは与えられた立場（自分の個人的意見と異なる場合もある）から歴史問題の諸問題について論じて、クリティカルシンキング能力を身につけます。
 
Goals of the course   
In this course, students will learn about collective memories and the various aspects of the so-called “history issue”. Through group debates, in which students will discuss and analyze war-related issues from an assigned political position, students will learn debating skills and the ability to argue from positions that are not necessarily their own personal view.
 
授業の概要   
コースは二週間毎の五つのブロックに分けられています。ブロックの一週目に、講義と文献に関するディスカッションがあります。２週目に、小グループで議題の賛否を論じます。
 
Overview of the course   
The course divides into five blocks of two weeks. In the first week of each block, there will be lectures and discussion of the readings for class. In the second week of each block, students divide into small groups and debate an issue in a “for vs against the motion” format.

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
予習：ディベートに向けて、文献と史料を読む必要があります。
宿題：アクティブラーニング・プロジェクトと期末試験の準備。

Students will read materials in preparation for class debates.
Students will write their Active Learning Project and prepare for the end-of-term exam.
 
履修上の注意   
この授業では、ディベートに積極的に参加することが求められています。また、基本的にこの授業は英語で行います。しかし、文献や史料については、日本語の場合が多いです。大変政治的なトピックですが、ディベートの際、教員によって与えられた立場から論じることで、個人的意見をめぐる対立を避けています。複雑な問題を多面的多角的に考察することが目的です。

Notes   
This course is in English. Positive participation in class debate is required. But, on many occasions, materials can be read in Japanese. This is a highly political topic. Students will argue from positions assigned by the teacher, so confrontation between students with different personal opinions will be avoided. The aim of this course is to understand these complicated issues from many different angles.
