Introduction to Gender: Cultural Construction of Gender in Comparison
 
授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
Gender is a social construction and the aim of this course is to familiarize students with the construction of gender and its variations across different cultures.

The course has three sections, the first section of the course will introduce gender theory with reference to problematic of classification.
The second section will introduce the social construction of gender in Japan which will allow students to understand their own mindsets.
Finally, the third section will present cultural variations in the construction of gender across different cultures.

As a whole, the goal of this course is for students to question what they have, until now, considered "natural" for women and men, and why.

成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
There will be a Quiz at the end of each class and two Active Learning Assignments.
There is no final exam or mid-term.

As assessment heavily relies on daily quizzes students are expected to attend all classes. Students can be excused from a class in case they notify the lecturer ( at least 4 hours) prior to class, in case of illness or emergency.

Preview/review   
Students are required to read all assigned class material. For students who do not come prepared, it will be difficult to follow the lecture and to obtain a good grade in the daily quiz.
Students are strongly encouraged to take notes while they read assigned material and to complete these during lectures.
Students are allowed to check their notes during the daily Quiz.

Notes   
Students are required to read the assigned class material before class and should be committed to attend all classes and to hand in their assignments in time.
There will be penalties for; unexcused absences, handing in assignments late, and sleeping in class.

The syllabus and assessment is subject to change depending on the number of students registered.
