[COIL] Postwar U.S.-Japan Relations

Goals of the course   
As a common goal of all COIL courses, students are expected to cultivate intellectual flexibility and resilience through international academic discussions with U.S. students in English. As for this course in particular, students will problematize and re-examine common understandings concerning the “U.S.-Japan alliance” by critically exploring its historical development.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
Starting from the end of the Pacific War, this one-week intensive course will trace the historical development of U.S.-Japan relations in the Cold War, the euphoria after the Cold War, and the “war on terrorism.” In addition to lectures delivered by the instructor, much time will be allocated to class discussion in order to prepare for the online international discussion with students at California State University, Northridge, on the final day of the week.

成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
1) Comment papers: 60%
Students are required to submit comment papers on the lectures or discussions at the end of each day.
2) Class performance: 40%
Students who actively participate in discussions will be highly graded.
 
事前・事後学習   
 
Preview/review   
Students are expected to come to the online discussion sessions well prepared by reviewing the lectures and discussions of the previous sessions.
 
履修上の注意   
 
Notes   
This is a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) type course. Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions. The intended goals of the international online discussion sessions cannot be achieved without such eager participation.
