Social History of the United States
 
授業の目標   
アメリカ社会史の分野における二次文献（研究書や学術論文）を読んで討論することを通じて、アメリカ史およびアメリカ研究の基礎的な技法を身につけることを目標とする。アメリカ合衆国の歴史を通して、人種、階級、ジェンダーの概念が相互に関連して構築されていることを確認したい。
 
Goals of the course   
The purpose of this course is to gain insight into recent scholarship of historical writing in the student's chosen topic of study in the field of American social history. Through intensive reading and discussion with the instructor, the student should be able to summarize literature in his dissertation writing.
 
授業の概要   
アメリカ合衆国の社会史研究の中で特に人種やジェンダーの観点から書かれた論文を選択して読み、歴史研究や地域研究の中で人種やジェンダーという分析概念の有効性を考察する。受講する学生の興味と関心を聞いた上で読むべき文献を決定する。
 
Overview of the course   
The concept of "race," "gender" and "class" has been intertwined in the history of the United States. We will carefully read literature from this perspective. Actual works to be read in class are to be decided in the first class meeting with the consultation with each studet.

成績評価の方法・基準   
学生の報告と討論への参加 (50%)、学期末に提出してもらうレポート (50%)を総合的に判断して成績を評価する。

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
読むべき文献を事前によく読んでおくこと。また、読むべき文献の著者について、簡単な略歴や史学史的な評価をあらかじめ調べておくこと。
 
Preview/review   
Students are required to read the materials before each class and be ready to participate actively in class discussion. They are also encouraged to do some biographical and historiographycal research of the author every time he reads an article.
 
履修上の注意   
受講を希望する学生は、あらかじめ自分の研究しようとするテーマは何で、それについて基礎的な文献は何があり、自分はこれまでにその中でどの読んできているのかについて整理した上で、初回の授業に出席すること。博士論文をまとめるために何をする必要があるのかについて認識していることが受講の条件である。
 
Notes   
The student should have a clearly defined adea of what he (she) intends to research in dissertation. He should also know what is the basic literature that he is expected to survey in his chosen field of research.
