アメリカ史（特にアメリカ社会史）あるいはアメリカ地域研究の分野で修士論文を書く学生に対して修士論文完成にいたる過程の指導を行なう。

The purpose of this course is to give advice and guidance to the students wishing to write MA thesis in the field of American social history. It is intended that each student should be able to complete his (her) master's degree within two years if he or she works according to the time schedule set in this course.

|
修士論文のテーマの確定、文献および史料の収集、読んだ情報の整理と分析、アウトラインの作成など、修士論文執筆と完成にいたるまで、学生の置かれている段階に応じて必要な指導を行なう。

Each stuxdent is given guidance and advice in:
(1) deciding on a topic to write a thesis about
(2) locating sources and literature
(3) analyzing the findiings
(4) making the outline
(5) writing the thesis

修士論文を完成するまでには、多くのステップを順にこなしていくことが必要である。初年度においては、基本的な文献を読み進む中で、自分の研究テーマを絞ることを重点に指導を行なう。教員を交えて他の学生たちと相互に討論を重ねることによって、２年目の初めまでには修士論文執筆のテーマを確定することを目標とする。２年目には、自分のテーマにおける文献や史料を集めて読み進めるとともに，得られた知見を発表しながら相互に批判し、アウトラインを作成していく。夏休みの終わりまでには一応の論文のアウトラインを完成させて、論文の完成を目指す。

In order to complete MA thesis, the student needs to go through many stages. In the first year, most of the time and effort should be devoted to read the available literature in the field of his choice. Through discussing with the insructor and the other students in class, each student thinks about which questions he (she) should raise when ariting a thesis. The goal for each student to aim for is to decide on a specific topic to write a thesis about.
In the second year, each student is encouraged to conduct research and gather information on the spcific topic of his choice. Again, discussion with the instructor and the other students is important in analyzing the data. Each student should make the outline at the end of summer, and write and revise for three months before turing in the final draft in early part of January.

随時、読んだ文献の内容やテーマについての先行研究の調査など、進行状況の口頭報告を求め課題を提出させるので、それらから研究の進展の状況を判断し、それをもとに成績を評価する。

Each student is asked to periodically make an oral or written report on the progress of his/her work. These progress reports as well as discussion in class are the basis of grading.

自分の研究テーマを追求するのみならず、同じ演習に参加している他の学生たちの研究テーマにも積極的な関心を示して、相互に刺激し合いながら研究を深める姿勢をもつこと。
