この授業では、戦後の日本において国際関係がどのように認識され、そのもとでどのような外交の構想が展開されたのか、現実の動向と照合しつつ振り返る。単に史実をなぞるのではなく、実際には追求されなかった未発の選択肢をも汲み取るのは、歴史に対する多面的かつ批判的な見方を養うためである。日本の政治と外交、あるいは近代史を専門としない学生であっても、戦後の日本がたどった経路について多少の「土地勘」を養っておくことは、自身の研究をすすめるうえで、さらには教育にたずさわるうえで、無意味ではなかろう。

This course will review the diplomatic relations of postwar Japan with a focus on how Japanese intellectuals perceived international relations and what policy suggestions they gave. By taking unrealized policy options into consideration, the course will help students cultivate multifaceted and critical perspectives on history. Building a sense of familiarness with history should be meaningful to all the sub-fields of Japanese studies.

この授業では、歴史家や政治学者が書いた研究論文にくわえ、同時代に書かれた時評や情勢分析、あるいは政策提言などを手がかりとして、戦後日本の国際関係を概観するとともに、それを背後で規定した政治および思想の状況にまで視線をのばす。

The course will not only overview the international relations of postwar Japan, but also look into the political and ideological background by reading contemporaneous critiques and analyses as well as retrospective studies.

授業での報告と議論への参加、およびレポートにもとづいて成績評価をおこなう。レポートは、授業をとおして身につけた知見や考え方が、受講者自身の研究にどのように活かされるのかについて書くこと。配点は、報告50％、レポート30%、平常点20％とする。

Class participation and assignment (70%) : Students are expected to give reviews of the assigned reading (50%), and to eagerly participate in the discussions (20%).
Term paper (30%) : Students are expected to write a term paper on how they can apply the knowledge and ideas acquired through this course to their individual studies.
