・この演習では、先行研究およびドキュメンタリーフィルムを詳細に読み解くことで日本社会の多文化化に関わる課題について検討する。
・その際に、移民、外国出身者に関する政策や法制度、また、その背景にある歴史的経緯を理解する。
・日本で暮らす外国出身者やエスニック・マイノリティが直面してきた課題や困難について論理的な議論を行うことができる。

・Students will learn diversity issues and multicultural aspects of Japanese society through scholarly articles and documentary films.
・Through this course, students will develop an understanding of the historical backgrounds and the immigration policies.
・Students will be able to make logical arguments around the social issues and challenges that migrants and ethnic minorities in Japan have faced.

2015年のデータによれば、日本には210万を超える外国籍住民が暮らしており、その数は今後も一層増加することが予想されている。この状況に鑑みて、日本社会における多文化共生のあり方を考えることが必要とされている。過去、そして現在、どのような人びとが来日しているのだろうか？現代日本社会における多文化共生とは何を意味するのか？この授業では、日本社会の多文化化を、社会統合論と移民やエスニック・マイノリティの経験に関する事例研究を議論する。この授業は2部から構成されている。1部では日本の多様性と移民に関わる理論もしくは実証研究を取り上げ、2部では移民の経験を、エスニシティ、アイデンティティ、労働とジェンダーの観点から検討する。

The statistics show over 2.1 million residents in Japan have international backgrounds without the Japanese citizenship in 2015. It is predictable that the number of the new immigrants or “newcomers” will be increasing. This trend directs us to consider the multicultural coexistence in Japanese society. Who have arrived in Japan in the past and present? What is the multicultural coexistence（tabunka-kyosei） in the context of contemporary Japan? Throughout this course, we will discuss how Japanese society has diversified over time through the theories of social integration and case studies of migrant experiences. The course is divided into two parts. The first part reviews the theoretical and empirical literatures on ethnic diversity and immigration in Japan. The second part focuses on the migrants’ experiences and issues around ethnicity, identity, work and gender.
