This course examines the development of urban social history and the dominant methods of historical analysis in postwar Japan and the United States. Specifically, it focuses on the unique traditions of urban history that developed in both countries and seeks to identify recent trends in each tradition. By analyzing the unique traditions of social history that developed in the two nations and the distinct social contexts within which they developed, students will grow to understand both the individual character of Japanese urban social history and the commonalities that it shares with other traditions outside of Japan. During the spring semester, we will read articles by leading postwar social historians from both Japan and the United States. One student will be expected to present on the reading each week. Reports should focus on the methodology, arguments, and logic of the texts with which we engage. During the fall semester, students will utilize the knowledge, methods, and perspectives they learned during the previous semester to conduct original research. Students will be required to select a theme, gather primary sources, and analyze the extant body of research on their topic. They will present their results in a series of presentations during the semester.
