This is an advanced seminar on contentious politics, intended for those who have taken the introductory course on the subject (PCS Research Methodology) from this instructor. A small number of non-PCS students who have taken similar graduate-level political sociology courses may also join (but please contact the instructor prior to the first class meeting).

This course adopts a seminar style, with weekly reading assignments and a term paper requirement.

Depending on the participants' interest, this course will cover some or all the subjects below.
1. Social Scientific Approaches to Collective Identities and Communal Conflict 2. Mechanisms and Processes of Violent and Nonviolent Contentious Interaction 3. Culture and Contentious Interaction 4. Political Regimes and Contentious Interaction 5. Contentious Politics and Democratization
In the last several weeks of the course, we may devote class meetings to reading and peer-reviewing each other's term-paper drafts.

Active classroom participation and weekly assignments: 50% Term paper: 50%

All non-PCS students who are interested in taking this course must contact and consult with the instructor in prior to the first course meeting.
All participants are required to write and submit an original research paper by the end of the semester. The central question and outline of the term paper will require the instructor’s approval before the participant begins to write his or her paper.
