Introduction to International Economics

現代社会を考察するうえで「グローバル化」は重要な要素であるが、そもそも「グローバル化」とはどのような事象なのか。本演習では経済面の現象に着目し、「国境を超える」(=国際的な)取引が活発に行われるようになったことをグローバル化の一側面として捉え、国際的な経済・金融活動の基本的なメカニズムを理解し、その観点からグローバル化に伴う現代社会を取り巻く問題を考察するための力を身に着けることを目標とする(具体的には現実のトピックについて経済学的な基本概念を用いつつ議論ができること)。

The phenomenon of "globalization" is one of the key concepts to understand today's society. The goal of this course is obtaining skills to discuss issues arising from the globalization through understanding basic mechanisms of international economic activities. The globalization here is discussed in economic dimensions.

授業では、まず1か国の経済・金融活動の仕組みや状況を把握するために必要な概念、指標等の基本について学ぶ。そのうえで、「国境を超える」(=国際)取引が一国内での経済・金融取引とは異なる点を明らかにするために2つの国が存在する場合の経済・金融活動を考察する。現実には複数の国が存在するため、次の段階では3か国以上の国が存在するケースについて概念的に考察するとともに、実際の事例を用いたケーススタディにより経済のグローバル化のもたらす影響について検討する。

The course consists of lectures covering the basics of international economics, sessions discussing several essential notions about international economics and international finance conducted by participants, case studies and discussions.

期末課題:レポート形式とする。授業で取り上げたテーマの中から1つのトピックを選択し、レポートを作成する。

The basics of international economics and international finance are provided first. Then the two countries model is discussed to understand the features of international economic transactions. The multiple countries model is introduced as the real world consists of more than three countries. Case studies are carried out in the last half of the course. Topics covered are free trades, international arrangements enhancing free trade, international capital movements and international financial crises.
Active learning tasks include a short essay about basics of international economics and participating the in-house tour and the lecture at the Bank of Japan.
At the end of the course, an end of term essay which covers one of the topics discussed during the course should be submitted.

The requirements of the course are: 1) Contributions to classes: 30 percent; summarizing reference literature properly and reporting them accordingly, participating discussions by presenting own ideas properly. 2) Reports submitted as active learning tasks: 10 percent each; understanding essential notions and summarizing reference literature and reference sources properly. 3) End of term essay: 50 percent; summarizing reference literature properly for the chosen topic and presenting own opinions in a persuasive manner.

3回目以降の授業には、事前に授業で配布する資料類を読んでから参加すること。

Each participant is expected to give presentations during the class at least once through the course.
