Security Communities and zones of peace

|
|
Considering current global developments, it is clear that in an interconnected world our own security is dependent upon that of others.
How can one build upon a peace no matter how fragile? In post-conflict environments, regions go through different stages of "zones of peace," from negative peace or the absence of war, to some that eventually form stable regional zones of positive peace or security communities. In this course we will look at how some regions are able to transcend conflicts. Furthermore, we will discuss and critique the universality of security communities.

This course will primarily be using qualitative methodologies, though for those preferring quantitative methodologies, I will recommend a combination of both. We will look at how dynamic socio-political processes between countries can either exacerbate or improve relations regionally.
In order to do this, we will use induction, interpretation, and the historical data available to us in order to better understand how regions have formed peaceful internal relations. We will further read and discuss articles on security communities and the various stages of zones of peace and relate this to geographical regions of interest. Those participating will be asked to give presentations and do research into regions of their own choosing.

The grade will be determined as follows: 80 percent based on presentations and 20 percent participation in the class.

If time permits we might make a field trip and/or watch a documentary feature related to the topic at hand.
