アメリカ社会史の分野における二次文献（研究書や学術論文）を読んで討論することを通じて、アメリカ史およびアメリカ研究の基礎的な技法を身につけることを目標とする。アメリカ合衆国の歴史を通して、人種、階級、ジェンダーの概念が相互に関連して構築されていることを確認したい。

The goal of this course is train the students in the use of literature (books and articles) in the field of American history. Each student, after taking this course, should be able to use primary sources in writing his MA thesis.

アメリカ合衆国の社会史研究の中で特にジェンダーの観点から書かれた論文を選択して読み、歴史研究や地域研究の中でジェンダーという分析概念の有効性を考察する。
|
|
|
|
Several articles and a book will be assigned. They will be selected after consultation with the students. Carefully reading and discussing each article/chapter with other students in class, each student is expected to learn the skill of using secondary literature in his psoposed topic of study.

今年度は、1学期に元黒人奴隷たちの語りを読んだことを受けて、
(1) 黒人奴隷制度またはその中で生活していた奴隷たちについての基礎的な研究書や論文
あるいは、
(2) 奴隷解放後の元奴隷たちの家族やコミュニティの形成についての研究書
のふたつの主題のうち、受講学生の関心により適合したもののどちらかを選択して、講読する。

The majority of the students in the class probably have taken my course in the Spring semester which is focussed on the use of primary sources in the historical writing, and, therefore, have read much material from slave narratives. In this semester, we will read literature on:
either
(1) African American slaves under slavery
or
(2) African Americans after emancipation
After consultation with the students in the first class meeting, one book and several articles will be chosen in one of the above areas. We will read one article or one chapter every week for the remaining of the semester.

学生の報告と討論への参加 (50%)、学期末に提出してもらうレポート (50%)を総合的に判断して成績を評価する。
報告の評価基準：レジュメの内容、内容要約が正確にできているか、自分の観点から読むことができているか
討論の評価基準：報告者の報告の内容について討論すべき課題を自分で発見し討論できるか
学期末レポートの基準：読んだ文献の内容を自分で整理し分析しながら考察することができるか

報告を担当しているしていないに関わらず、毎回読むべき文献を事前によく読んでおくこと。
|

Students are required to read the materials before each class and be ready to participate actively in class discussion.

アメリカ史アメリカ研究の分野を専攻する学生でなくても履修できるように配慮するが、この分野についての知識を全くもたない学生はあらかじめアメリカ史の概説書や黒人奴隷制度の研究を読むなどして、最低限必要な知識を得ておくことが望ましい。

Students should attend the first class meeting, because selection of literature to be read and discussed will be made at that time.
