Title(English)
Slave Narratives

Goals of the course
The aim of this course is to train the students in the use of historical primary sources. Each student, after taking this course, should be able to use primary sources in his MA thesis if he or she is to specialize in American history or American area studies.

Overview of the course
We will use Federal Writers' Project to read ex-slaves narratives. Narratives should be used with care. We will explore why each story was told the way it was told by the teller, and to what extent each story is representative of the slave experience in the South.

Grading system for assessment
Oral Presentation and Discussion Participation (50% of the Total); Final Paper (50% of the Total)

Preview/review
Students are required to read the materials before each class and be ready to participate actively in class discussion.

Notes
Bear in mind, however, much of the material we will be reading in class is not written in standard English, but in African American dialect.
