The goals of this workshop are:
-to learn to listen to the SL (Japanese) message analytically to interpret its intended meaning and logic, not verbatim vocabulary
-to learn interpreting strategies and tactics for Japanese-to-English simultaneous interpreting and whispering (chuchotage)
-to learn to produce coherent, cohesive, concise, and natural TL (English) renditions

Overview of the course:
This course focuses on improving the students' J-E interpreting skills in the “simultaneous” mode, covering such skill areas as analytical listening, strategic syntactic restructuring and translation, and general delivery/presentation, paying close attention to the problems that are peculiar to “Japanese into English simultaneous” interpreting work. The students will be exposed to SL talks that vary in discourse style and context (scripted/extemporaneous, speech/interview/multi-participant discussion, live/recorded, slow/moderate/fast, etc.) to learn the best “J-E simultaneous interpreting strategies and tactics” for each type.
