担当者が長年にわたって現地調査してきた東アジア、中央アジア、西アジアにまたがるたくさんのアルタイ諸言語に触れ、記述言語学の実際や、少数民族の言語や文化、口承文芸にもふれる。たくさんの写真や音声から現地の言語や文化を「感じる」。日本語、朝鮮語、とも共通する類型である、いわゆるアルタイ型言語の構造に親しむ。日本語の起源などについても考える。

To give lectures on various Altaic languages spoken in the broad areas from East Asia, Central Asia to West Asia, the current status of descriptive linguistics, languages and cultures of minorities, and oral cultures. To "feel" the local languages and cultures through lots of photos and recorded data which the instructor has collected in the field survey. To familiarize yourselves with the structure of Altaic languages which is common with Japanese and Korean. Also to think about the origin of Japanese.

アルタイ諸言語は、ツングース諸語、モンゴル諸語、チュルク諸語の3つのグループからなる。さらにツングース諸語はエウェン、ソロン、ウデヘ、ナーナイ、満州などの12ほどの言語からなり、広くシベリア、サハリン、アムール流域及び沿海州に分布している。モンゴル諸語はモンゴル、ブリヤート、ダグール、東郷、保安などの10ほどの言語からなり、中央アジアから西はカスピ海沿岸などまで分布している。チュルク諸語はトルコ、チュヴァシュ、タタール、カザフ、ウズベク、ウイグル、サラール、サハなど27ほどの言語からなり、シベリアから中央アジアを横切って西アジアに至るまで分布している。
後期は主に講義担当者の論文「アルタイ諸言語の3グループ(チュルク、モンゴル、ツングース)、及び朝鮮語、日本語の文法は本当に似ているのか―対照文法の試み―」を読む。いよいよ本格的にこれらの言語の類似と違いに思いを巡らすわけだ。しかもその全貌に迫ろうという試みだ。それは担当者のライフワークでもあるわけだが、これまで全力で取り組んできたすべてであり、今も日々研究を進展させている現在進行形の研究そのものなのだ。それを惜しむことなく全てお話ししよう、ってえわけだよ。いろんなエピソードを交えて一人の人間・研究者の生きざまをも垣間見るようなこの授業、とって損はないと思うよ。
(前期はまず筆者の20年以上にわたる現地調査の大量の写真を見ながら、そのエピソードを聞く。サハリンからシベリア、中央アジア、アナトリアにおよぶ壮大な世界を知り、その諸言語と諸文化の大雑把な特徴を頭に入れていく。シャーマニズムなども含む彼らの精神文化、牧畜、農業、狩猟・漁労・トナカイ牧畜などの生業及び物質文化にも触れる。 次に、ツングース諸語のデータをもとに、基礎語彙の録音からの音声表記に取り組む。その際音韻論及び表記のもつ諸問題にもふれる。次にナーナイ語を中心に文法を概説し、実際の民話等の録音つき資料を読む。その際には日本語や朝鮮語などとの対照言語学的な観点からも説明を加える。ここでは謎々や早口言葉なども含む無文字言語における口承文芸の実際にもふれる。前期の終わりには黒沢明監督の映画「デルスウ・ウザーラ」も見る。)

Altaic languages consist of Tungusic, Mongolian, and Turkic languages. Tungusic languages are spoken in the areas from Siberia, Sakhalin, and the Amur River basin. Mongolian languages range from Central Asia to the coast of the Caspian Sea, while Turkic languages are found in the areas from Siberia to Central Asia and West Asia. In the first semester, to overview the characteristics of languages and cultures in the vast area from Sakhalin, Siberia, Central Asia to Anatoria. Then challenge the phonetic transcription of the recorded data of basic vocabularies in Tungusic languages. Next explain the grammar of Tungusic language, especially Nanai. At the end of the first semester, watch a movie of Akira Kurosawa.
In the second semester, read the instructor's research paper,「アルタイ諸言語の3グループ(チュルク、モンゴル、ツングース)、及び朝鮮語、日本語の文法は本当に似ているのか―対照文法の試み―」, and examine the similarities and differences of Altaic languages, Korean, and Japanese.
Active learning: write a report.

チュルク諸語(トルコ語)、モンゴル諸語、朝鮮語のどれか(もしくは日本専攻で日本語学)に触れたことのある学生の受講を特に勧めるが、どの専攻語(地域言語A)の学生でも、どこの地域の学生でも大歓迎である。言語学の最低限の知識をもっていることが望ましいが、意欲のある者に関しては知らなくとも別にかまわない。日本語の起源や、日本語の類型に関心のある学生も歓迎する。中央アジアやロシア、中国が専門の学生にとってもすごくお勧めする。
