Title(English)
History of Western Ideas

Goals of the course
This year's class will follow the title of “The Genealogy of Self-awareness”. We will take a predominantly epistemological viewpoint in examining the establishment of modern self-awareness that began from Descartes. Therefore, rather than look at pragmatic issues of individuals in social scenes, we will delve into how the structures of ego have been discussed in western thought from an epistemological viewpoint. By participating in this class, students will be able to understand the structure of epistemology in western thought (and be able to read difficult philosophy books), thereby grasping the basis of western thought, and utilizing it in their own thinking.

Overview of the course
As a class of historical ideologies, although we will track the history of western thought, we will not always do so in chronological order, but rather, cut across the strains of ideologies to delve deeper into issues of particular interest in each class.
Please refer to the class schedule for the topics to be discussed in class.
