本講義の主題は、創造的な沈黙についてである。日常的には消極性のあらわれとして否定的にとらえられがちな「沈黙」の創造的な意義とその表象化を、思想・文学の領域や映像・音楽などの芸術表現のなかに探究し、多弁や饒舌が到達できない認識論的な地平によこたわる「沈
黙」の豊饒な意味について、さまざまな具体的事例・素材をもとに徹底して考えてゆくことを目標とする。
20世紀の先駆的な沈黙論を手がかりにして、情報の喧騒のなかで混迷する21世紀の知性の新たな可能性を展望したい。

The main theme of this course is creative silence.
Silence tends to be considered passive and negative in daily lives. However we will explore its creative meaning and representation in artistic expressions such as thoughts, literature, films, and music, and will contemplate the abundant meaning of "silence" lain down on the epistemological horizon where loquacity or glibness are not able to reach based on various examples and materials.
We quest for potentials for the intelligence in the 21th century which is wandering in a flood of information by taking pioneering studies of silence in the 20th century as a hint.

具体的な作家や詩人、アーティストにおける沈黙をめぐる表現を分析しながら、さまざまな沈黙形象の方法論を学んでゆく。とくに前半は先駆的な沈黙思想の探究者だった作曲家ジョン・ケージの思想に焦点をあて、後半はサイレント・フィルムの文法に焦点をあてる。

Study various methodologies of the figures of silence, examining expressions of silence by various authors, poets, and artists.
In the first half of the semester, we focus on a composer, John Milton Cage Jr. who is a pioneer of thoughts of silence.
In the latter half, we center on the grammar of silent films.
