To understand issues on states and ethnic groups through comparing societies in the Southeast Asian islands (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippine). Also, examine the current status, challenges, and future measures on how people coexist in multicultural societies.

Looking back modern and contemporary histories in the Southeast Asian islands, understand developments of multicultural societies, foundation of colonial states and nation states, and the characteristics in forming communities. Furthermore, look to the 21st century's politics and societies in the Southeast Asian islands.
