The Urban Social History of Nineteenth-Century Osaka

This course examines socio-spatial structure of Osaka, Japan's second largest city. Specifically, students will attempt to elucidate the lived experience of the urban population and the network of relationships that enabled their survival. In addition, students will attempt to understand the unique features of the various micro-societies that collectively comprised modern Osaka's segmental structure. Furthermore, students will attempt to understand the structure of urban society in modern Osaka, through the use of a range of empirical sources, including primary records, newspapers, and maps. Concretely, students will focus their attention on Osaka's foreign concession, red-light districts, outcast communities, slum districts, and mega-factories. In doing so, they will learn the techniques required to examine the internal structure of urban communities and gain a deeper understanding of the historical and structural nature of contemporary urban social problems.
