このゼミでは、近現代日本社会の論点を中心に、「近代」「近代性」「資本主義的近代」とは何かについて、ローカルヒストリーとグローバルヒストリー、戦争、ナショナリズムの形成、反近代的対抗運動、さらに身体、都市空間、マイノリティなどの論点から学んでいく。

This seminar deals with the ideas of Modern, Modernity and Modern Capitalism in Japan with considering the issues such as local history, global history, war, nationalism, and counter-practices in popular culture.

近代日本をめぐる基本的な論点や概念、アプローチを学び、それらのテーマが現代において有している意味について考えていく。差別問題とナショナリズム、都市と貧困との関係について学ぶことも目的の一つとする。

In this seminar we try to understand the basic definitions of Japanese modernity with referring to global process of modernity. We also focus on gender issues, fascism, and surrealism movement as counter-culture both in Japan and the US.
