Poverty Relief and Poverty Management in Nineteenth-Century Japan

今期では、「19世紀日本における貧民の救済と統制」というテーマのもと、幕末・維新期期の公文書や地域史料を読んでいきます。幕末・維新期の史料を読み解くための基礎知識の修得を目標とします。活字史料から読んでもらい、実証的な歴史学研究の基礎となる一次史料の分析方法を学びとって下さい。あわせて19世紀日本の都市社会の実態にも言及してもらいたいと思います。テーマの設定は、『大阪府布令集』や『史料集 明治初期被差別部落』、『大阪の部落史』などの中で興味を持ったもの数個を選択する形で行います。その史料が問題としている諸事象をテーマにし、各自テーマを小グループで担当してもらいます。各グループは、授業中に一回の発表を行い、期末に簡略な成果報告を提出してもらいます。発表のレジュメや報告原稿を作成する際、グループでの事前準備が不可欠です。

Course Objectives
①This course seeks to provide students with a basic understanding of the social history of poverty and poverty relief in nineteenth-century Japan. Students will learn about the everyday lives and subsistence modes of the urban poor, and the mechanisms and strategies through which the authorities attempted to ensure their regulation and survival.
②This course is also intended to provide student with a basic understanding of empirical methods of historical analysis by providing them with opportunity to read and discuss a wide array of archival sources.

今期では、近世からの歴史的展開を踏まえながら、明治中期までの時期を中心に学習します。とりわけ１９世紀東京の賤民体制にスポットライトを当てて、その形成過程と内部構造を浮き彫りにするとともに、非人や穢多の生存を支えた諸社会関係の解明に努めます。こうした研究を通じて、１９世紀東京に生きた個々の賤民の生活実態を明らかにするだけでなく、東京の都市社会の社会＝空間構造を描写することを目指します。

This course focuses on the social history of poverty and poverty relief in nineteenth-century Japan's megacities. Utilizing a broad range of archival sources, students will examine the social structure of Japan's vast urban underclass and the network of social relations that enabled the survival of impoverished urban dwellers. In addition, students will analyze the basic strategies and institutional mechanisms through which the public authorities and members of the urban elite utilized to regulate the poor and ensure their subsistence. Course Format and Grading
This course will blend lectures, discussions, and group activities. Students are expected to complete the required reading before class each week. Regular attendance and meaningful participation in both discussions and group activities are required, and will impact your final grade, particularly for those with borderline grades. Grades will be calculated in the following manner.
•10% In-class participation and activities
•10% Reading and map quizzes
•80% Final exam

Classroom Conduct and Academic Integrity
