Society and Education in Modern Britain

This course aims to give a brief introduction to the historical features of society and education in the 19th century England. The present English educational system differs greatly from that of Japan. Some key characters of English education were set in the 19th century, the periods covered in this course. The lectures help students grasp the difference between Japanese and English education and also historical origins of English education.
It is desirable that students take both Spring& Autumn Courses since they are planned as continuous lectures.

During the Spring Term, lectures are to concentrate on the features during the 19th century. Firstly, lectures will explain the classed and gendered variety within the society and education. Then, detailed lectures are given on changing lives and education of middle class boys, middle class girls and working class children.
