授業の目標   
 「十九世紀の思想と文化」
 十九世紀英語圏における文化的事象を多面的、多角的に分析することをつうじて、この時代に人類が経験した未曾有の思想史的、精神史的激変が、今日のわれわれになにをもたらしたかについて、考察してゆくことにします。春学期には、とくにロマン主義と呼ばれる藝術ならびに思想の潮流を念頭におきつつ、十九世紀前半における自然科学と人文科学との相互関係、機械論的思考の擡頭などについて全容を綜合的に把握することを到達目標とします。
 
Goals of the course   
[Thought and Culture in the Nineteenth Century]
The aim of this course is to provide students with the general overview of the agenda for studying and analysing cultural phenomena witnessed in nineteenth-century Brintain and the English-speaking world of the same age. Major subjects include the mutual impact of natural and human sciences and the development of popular culture.
 
授業の概要   
 担当教員の講義により、問題の所在と概括的理解を得るとともに、各論点ごとに紹介された参考にすべき文献をじっさいに読んでみることをとおして、より深い考察を独自に進めることができるようにします。

成績評価の方法・基準   
 授業中に行なう小テスト(月一回か二回程度、各学期の最後に行なうものを含む)の総合点で評価します。各テストの点数は10点満点か20点満点ということになりますが、可能であれば、その他に口頭発表の機会も設けたいと思います。口頭発表が行なわれた場合は、その内容を50パーセント、小テストの結果を50パーセントとして評価します。
 
Grading system for assessment   
Grades will be based on preparation before class (50%) and infrequent tests or quizzes (50%).
 
事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
 各回ごとのテーマに則した下調べを行なうこと。テクストが指定された場合は、先のほうまで主体的に読み進み、疑問の箇所がないようにしておくこと。
 
Preview/review   
Habitual perusal of the assigned work is essential. Also, the importance of the note-taking must not be neglected.
 
履修上の注意   
 随時小テストが行なわれるため、授業時に得た示唆を帰宅後にじゅぶん省察し、必要な文献を仔細に検討するなど、日頃からの努力が欠かせなくなります。予習、復習の積み重ねを重要視すること。

1. several different types of dictionaries
2. a step-by-step training in logical thinking
3. the accumulation of theoretical or practical knowledge.
