American Literature I (Lecture): Topics in American Culture 2017 II
This course surveys American jazz from its beginning up to the early 1940s and modern American music in general, using videos, recordings and excerpts from textbooks written in English, and provides students with the basic knowledge of early jazz, modern music and critical perspectives on them.
We will survey the history of jazz up to the early 1940s and representative modern American classical music, watching Ken Burns' documentary work on jazz, reading excerpts from textbooks and listening to representative recordings. Students are required to submit one 1-2 page response paper for each class, one mid-term short paper and one final paper written in Japanese or English.
