「ヴィクトリア朝の文学と文化」 主にヴィクトリア朝(1837年‐1901年)の英語圏における文学的創造行為と文化現象に焦点をおきながら、同時代の人文科学、社会科学、自然科学の動向との関連性を論じます。代表的な文学作品にかんして理解を深めることが肝要ですが、それとともに、同時代の芸術全般ならびに社会状況その他についても考察できるようにします。受講者は、これまでに得てきた基礎的知識を踏まえ、徐々に専門的知識を獲得するよう努め、取りあつかわれた時代におけるイングランドならびにイギリス帝国の文化状況の包括的理解から進んで、個別のの文学者とその作品にかんする概括的な説明を行なえる段階にまで達することを目標とします。

[Victorian Literature and Culture] This course covers British literature and culture during Queen Victoria's reign (1837-1901). While we read the major literary works of this period, contemporary arts and social conditions should be taken into consideration. At the same time, what each student must acquire is contextual understanding of the condition of England or British Empire.

テクストの内容にもとづいた受講者の発表(50パーセント)、授業中に行なう小テスト(月一回か二回程度、各学期の最後に行なうものを含む)(50パーセント)の総合点によって評価します。

Grades will be based on preparation before class (50%) and infrequent tests or quizzes (50%).

各回ごとのテーマに則した下調べを行なうこと。テクストを主体的に読み進み、疑問の箇所がないようにしておくこと。

Habitual perusal of the assigned work is essential. Also, the importance of the note-taking must not be neglected.

この授業は教職課程認定上の「教科に関する科目」(中学校及び高等学校 英語)の英米文学に該当します。随時小テストが行なわれるため、授業時に得た示唆を帰宅後にじゅうぶん省察し、必要な文献を仔細に検討するなど、日頃からの努力が欠かせなくなります。予習、復習の積み重ねを重要視すること。
