この授業の目的は、ひとつには、「記憶」をキーワードとしていくつかの事例を検討することで、記憶とアイデンティティの形成とのあいだには関係があるということを理解することです。その上で、過去の出来事の記憶は、多様で多義的な行為であるということを知る。これがもうひとつの目的です。

By the completion of this course:
1) students will understand the relationships between social memory and collective identity formation through reading and reviewing case studies discussing “social memory.”
2) students will learn that remembering the past is social action containing a wide range of meanings.

こんにち、「戦争の記憶」や「震災の記憶」といったように、「記憶」という言葉が過去の出来事を語る際によく使われます。社会のなかで過去の出来事を記憶するという集合的な行為は、その出来事に関わる集団のアイデンティティの形成に影響を及ぼすと言われてきました。これは、その社会のなかで多数派を占める集団だけでなく、例えばエスニック・マイノリティと呼ばれる少数派の集団についても当てはまります。この授業では、過去のある出来事の社会における記憶が多義的であり多様であるということについて、その歴史的背景も含めて考えていくことにしたいと思います。

“Memory” has long been a keyword to describe and document past events and experiences such as “social memory of war” and “social memory of disaster,” contemporary scholarship suggests that remembering a particular past is a social and collective action that influences group identity formation, especially when the group(s) has ties to the past. This is also applicable for racial/ethnic minority groups. This course will examine the case studies discussing “social memory” as well as the historical backgrounds of those cases.
