Slovene Language and Culture

The aim of the course is to introduce basic structures and functions of the Slovene language using communicative approach. Cultural topics of interest to students will also be presented.
|
|
|
|
As part of the course, students will learn about the basic patterns of Slovene language phonology, morphology and syntax while interacting with each other. Elements of Slovene culture, such as geography, people, food, and celebrations will be presented using the information in the course book, as well as slides and other visuals. Students will be encouraged to do own research on the Internet about the topics presented.

Week 1 - Introduction to the course, Useful resources, Greetings, Slovene alphabet, Numbers Week 2 - Personal information: Introduce yourself and others, Verb "to be"; Slovene public personalities Week 3 - Slovene verbs: conjugation - Present Tense, Polite forms (ti/vi) Week 4 - Review; Social language: Greetings, Offers, Requests, Apologies; Present Tense F/P Week 5 - Nouns - Gender (Masculine, Feminine, Neuter); Number (Singular, Dual, Plural) Week 6 - General information about Slovenia: geography, symbols Week 7 - Review; Adjectives - Qualitative, Possessive; Colours; Noun-adjective agreement, Family Tree Week 8 - Active learning - Students conduct research on Slovenian personalities and cultural elements Week 9 - Presentations Week 10 - Times & Routines: Present Tense F/P Week 11 - Review; Past and Future Tense; Social language Week 12 - Food and Shopping; Accusative and Genitive Cases for objects Week 13 - Travel - Asking for information, Health and Sports Week 14 - Active learning - In groups, students review the course materials and prepare dialogs Week 15 - Presentations & final review
The above schedule may be adjusted to accommodate students' needs and interests.

Students will be evaluated on their active class participation (50%), and presentations and quizzes (50%)
|

Homework will be assigned regularly. Students will be encouraged to take own responsibility for learning in and out of the classroom, including researching on the Internet.
