English Phonetics through Varieties of English
 
授業の目標   
英語には様々な変種(Varieties)が存在する。特に現在のイギリス・北米・南半球等、地理的な変種や社会階層的な方言の発音が、どのようにして成立してきたのかを知り、通事的・共時的な違いの原因をさぐるための背景知識を身につける。また、このことを通して英語の発音の特徴と傾向を知る。
 
Goals of the course   
By surveying the pronunciation of different varieties of English--regional and social--students will acquire knowledge of the features of English sounds and tendencies of sound change.
 
授業の概要   
英語の歴史を概観したあと、英語がどのようにして地球上に広がっていったかについて説明し、特にイギリスやアメリカにおける社会言語学的な研究についても触れる。その後、いくつかの方言を取り上げ、その発音の特徴を見て（聴いて）みる。
 
Overview of the course   
After briefly going over the history of English, the lecturer will explain how various regional differences of accent came into being. Sociolinguistic studies on British and North American varieties will also be taken up. Finally, examples of accents of English will be studied.

アクティブラーニングを含む平常点（30%）と試験（70%）の結果により評価する。

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
特に予習の必要はないが，前回の授業で説明したことをよく復習し，参考文献を読むこと。
アクティブラーニング等の課題が出された場合はそれを行い、成果を期限までに提出すること。
 
Preview/review   
Students are expected to revise what has been explained in the previous lectures and to read relevant literature before coming to class.
Active Learning tasks are to be handed in on time.
