Linguistics: Fundamentals of Syntax
 
授業の目標   
統語論を中心とした、言語学の入門講義である。生成文法の基本知識と「言語学的に考える」ための方法を身につけさせることを目標とする。
 
Goals of the course   
This course offers an introduction to syntactic theory. The aim is to let students acquire the basic knowledge of generative grammar and the methods of "thinking linguistically."
 
授業の概要   
統語論（文の構造を扱う分野）の基本原理を紹介し、その意義を解説する。主に英語の例を扱う。講義形式だが、練習問題、質疑応答等で積極的に授業に参加することを期待する。
 
Overview of the course   
Basic principles of syntax (sentence structure) will be introduced and discussed. Examples will be mostly from English. Each week the class consists of a lecture, an exercise, and discussion.

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
毎回課題の提出が求められる。必ず毎回の復習を行い、次の授業で質問・意見を述べるなどの積極的な参加が期待される。授業で提示される参考文献のうち1冊は読むことが推奨される。
 
Preview/review   
Students are required to submit homework each week. Students must review each lecture at home and are expected to prepare questions and discussion topics. It is recommended that they read at least one of the books introduced in class.
 
履修上の注意   
言語理論や統語論に関する予備知識は必要としないが、英文法に対する関心があると役に立つ。
 
Notes   
No prior knowledge in syntax or linguistic theory is required. An interest in English grammar is helpful. Active participation in class is essential.
