Title(English)   
Survey of Japanese Diaspora
 
授業の目標   
日本人・日系人の国際移動に関する文献を読み解くことによって、以下の2点を目標とします。
1) 日本の移民政策と、国際移動という文脈のなかでの日本人ならびに日系人の歴史と現状を理解する。
2) 日本国内および国外の日系人たちの事例研究を下敷きにして、移民が直面しうる課題や困難を説明できる。 
 
Goals of the course   
By completing the course, students should be able to:
1)Be familar with the historical backgrounds and development of Japanese migration policies.
2)Understand some of the challenges and issues that Nikkei have experienced through vicissitude of history, both in and outside of Japan.
3)Explain some of the issues and challenges that migrants in general could face, based on what students have learned form the case studies of Japanese migration.
 
授業の概要   
日本はこんにち移民受け入れ国となっていますが、過去には、北米・南米およびアジア諸国に人を送り出した移民送出国でした。日本を舞台とした国際移動はどのように発生したのでしょうか?「日本人であること」「日系であること」は移民たちやその子孫たちにとってどのような意味や影響を持つのでしょうか?この授業では、学問分野における蓄積やドキュメンタリーフィルムなどをとおして、日本国内外の日系人の歴史と現状を学んでいきます。
 
Overview of the course   
Today, Japan has become a destination for many migrants. Through history, however, it has also sent out many migrants to various part of the world, including North and South America and Asia. This course investigate this pheonomeon of international migration in Japanese political and social context. While discussing some of the scholarly writings and documentary films on the subject, we will be asking pertinent questions such as: How does international migration occur in Japan? What is its socio-political process? What does the term “Japnaese/Nikkei” mean to the Japanese immigrants and their descendants in Japan and abroad? We will condider these questions and more, and examine the lives of Nikkei of the past and present, in and out of Japan.

Students are expected to read the assigned articles prior to coming to class and submit a reading memo at the beginning of each class. Reading materials will be provided in class or posted on the course website.

Students are encouraged to take Community Studies 1A in the spring quarter prior to enroll in this course.
