世界諸地域の地域社会を学び、研究する、というのはどのような営みなのだろうか。地域の言語を習得し、地域社会を内在的に理解することによって、現代世界を考える際に、そして「自分のいる場所」を考える際にどのような視点を獲得することができるだろうか。そもそも、「地域研究」とは、どのような問題関心に基づいて、どのような方法で、どのような対象を扱うものなのだろうか。地域研究の最先端に接することで、以上の問いを理解することが、授業の目標である。

What does it mean to study various local societies in the world? What kind of new perspective can we acquire to understand globalizing world and our society by learning languages and local societies from inside? Actually, what are "area studies"? In what way do they put the questions, what is their subject, how is their methodology? This course aims to give students basic answer to such questions by presenting forefront of area studies.
