Upon completion of this course students will have developed the skills necessary to function and compete in an international business environment. These include:
1) building interpersonal communication skills so as to be able to speak more effectively in conferences, meetings, and on the telephone. 2) developing writing skills for business in e-mails and formal business letters. 3) be able to offer suggestions, give advice, and agree and disagree more assertively. 4) understand and develop an awareness of cultural differences and thus be able to communicate more effectively with people in today's global environment. 5) acquire knowledge about today's job market and have the necessary skills to interview successfully with a prospective employer.

Today's business world is changing rapidly, but one factor remains constant-- English is the language that bonds the world of business. It is and will continue to be the lingua franca of the global economy. This course will cover those areas that are becoming increasingly necessary to survive and compete in today's modern business world. Writing e-mails, communicating in meetings, giving presentations, and job interviewing are some of the topics that will be the focus during this term.

Week 4 International and domestic companies: Talking about what companies do. Week 5 Presenting your company. Case Study: Valentino chocolates Week 6 Introduction to e-mails; writing an effective e-mail. Week 7 Formal business e-mails and letters Week 8 Money and banking; talking about finance Week 9 Case Study: Angel Investments. Discussion and presentations. Week 10 Describing change: in general from school and work Week 11 Taking part in meetings: student role-plays Week 12 Business across cultures; Case Study: International visitors Week 13 Travel: making arrangements; communicating by phone and e-mail. Week 14 Student presentations Week 15 Review and feedback

Grading will be based on the following criteria:
1) Class participation and the timely completion of homework ( readings, writing exercises, case studies, etc. ) 40% 2) Presentations: 40% 3) Term end exam: 20%

Students are expected to come to each class fully prepared, having done any reading or writing assignment from the previous week. ( See above grading criteria). It will be the student's responsibility to keep and maintain all handouts given as these will be referred to regularly in a given class period and will also serve as study materials for tests.
