Academic English: Theme-based (Culture and Literary Studies)

The objective of this class is to familiarize the students in lecture-type classes conducted in English. Further, they are expected to acquire the basic knowledge of Japanese art, such as the major works, foreign influences, stylistic development, and special characteristics, as well as the effect of religious, historical, and social aspects of art.

This course is a survey of Japanese art covering the Asuka period (538 - 645) to the end of the Late Heian period (894 - 1192). Emphasis will be placed on Buddhist art, including sculpture and painting. Mostly Buddhist sculpture will be shown for the Asuka period. Buddhist sculpture and a few paintings will be shown in the Hakuho period 645 - 710). Buddhist sculpture, some paintings, and objects in the Shosoin Repository will be shown in the Tempyo period (710 - 794). Sculpture and painting related to Esoteric Buddhism will be shown in the Early Heian period (794 - 894). Buddhist sculpture, painting, and secular paintings will be shown in the Late Heian period (894 - 1192). Foreign works will also be shown to illustrate influences. Lecture accompanied by slides.

Students will be graded comprehensively for their active class participation (40%), active learning activities (10%) and term paper (50%).

Students must read the corresponding parts of the textbook beforehand, and review their notes and materials from the previous class.

|

Students must take notes and actively ask questions or give comments in class. Further, they must come to class prepared by reviewing their notes and reading the handouts, textbook etc.
