The theme of this course is English as a global language. Each week we will discuss various issues on this theme, with a particular emphasis on English in the Japanese context. These issues include English language ideologies, education, tourism, gender, and sexuality. In addition to instructor led classes, you will also work in small groups to present and lead a discussion on one of these issues in an assigned week. You will provide a short, written response to the discussion each week to prepare you for writing an essay, in which you will critically examine some of the issues we have discussed.
