The course has four goals for the students: 1. to increase comprehension of written English through the use of authentic materials widely read by native speakers; 2. to improve oral skills in English through meaningful communicative activities within the classroom, 3. to practice written skills in English through focused assignments, and 4. to develop a knowledge of the world and its people through contemporary writings.

In this class, the students will be given articles from various newspapers or magazines. All students are required to write an analytical essay related to each article.

In this course, the students will be given a number of selected articles from Newsweek or Time magazines every week. Then, they are asked to choose one of the articles and write an analytical essay on the article they have chosen. After handwriting the essay, the instructor will read and check the contents, quality, and grammar. When the completed essay is accepted as adequate, the students will be asked to print it out and put into the file provided by the instructor. There will be no exams in this class; however, students are required to hand in a certain number of essays in one year. If a students fails to clear the required number of papers, he or she will not be eligible for recieving credits.

Weekly reports must be printed out and put in file provided by the instructor. All students are required to attend over EIGHTY percent of the total number of classes or they will not be eligible for recieving credits. Other necessary information will be given to the students on the first day of class. Students are recommended to bring their own dictionaries to class.
