Academic English: Skill based

This course is for non-English major Japanese learners. The skill based focus will be on Writing in the first term and Speaking in the second term. Within academic writing skills grammar and vocabulary will be sub skills stressed to support the development of a high quality academic essay.
Proposition and Debate
Students will first develop a theme through writing, culminating in a paper; which leads to the second term where they present and defend their thesis in a debate forum. By using sound logic they can build and defend a thesis on any topic as it relates to areas of social and political study at TUFS. First term: Academic writing: Textbook: Effective Academic Writing 3: The Essay Oxford University Press ISBN: 978-0-19-430924-0 Students will carry out writing exercises culminating in a 2,000 word paper.
Students will be taught skills in English writing (including grammar), research, discussion and presentation, and will develop expertise in their area of study through research, discussions and presentations in English. Weekly reading assignments 30 - 60 min. Students should take notes in class and may use laptop computer in class. Please listen to teacher lectures and use computer only for the purposes of the class.
