現代英語の母胎である初期近代英語を理解することで、英語にかんする知識全般の向上を図る。とくに英語らしいリズムと単語の原義をふまえることで、英文を記号として日本語に替えるのではなく心象をともなう音を堪能できる素養を培うこと。

This class aims to help students enlarge their knowledge on English through learning Early Modern English.
We will read around 30 lines in a 90-minute class with the aim of acquiring essential rules on grammar and verse.

担当の学生がテキストを音読し日本語訳を発表します。発表する日本語訳は美しい翻訳ではなく単語の意味と文の構造を伝える逐語訳が求められます。教員がテキストの理解に関する質問をし、応答ののち補足的な解説をおこないます。１回の授業で扱う例文はきわめて少ないので、あたえられたテキストに関してはその一語一句すべてを理解することが求められます。進み具合に応じて、授業の後半では英語のなぞなぞや慣用句を紹介します。

We will closely read Shakespeare's texts: word by word, literally. Students should be prepared to translate English texts into Japanese. In class they are required to read aloud, and make comments on the text.

平常点を１０％、期末試験または期末レポートを９０％の割合で算出します。平常点は授業への取り組み、授業での取り組みを学期末に総合的に勘案して１０点満点で評価します。学期末試験は４５点の問題を４題出題し２つを選ぶ形式とします。レポートの課題は授業内で伝えます。

事前の学習では丹念に辞書をひくこと。とくに単語の語根と原義をふまえるように心がけること。事後学習では授業の解説でなお理解できない箇所をあきらかにする（次の授業で質問をして解決すること）とともに、意味のまとまりを感じながら音読することが肝要です。

Students are expected to prepare Japanese translation "written down" in notebook. Do not improvise in class.
|

テキストの日本語訳をノートに書いてくること。
授業には辞書を用意すること。事前学習では『英和大辞典』（研究社）および『ジーニアス英和大辞典』（大修館）を使うことが望ましい。
