This course is designed to help students develop their ability in reading and listening, both in practical and academic situations. By the end of this course, students should be able to read and comprehend a variety of texts; analyse the content precisely as well as critically; appreciate figures of speech, humour and irony; and write summaries and short essays about the materials they have read.

In this course, students will mainly read newspaper articles of various topics. Opportunities to read short novels, poems, or critical essays will also be provided, depending on students' interests. Students are expected not only to read texts but also to take part in various activities such as pair/group work,discussion and presentation. The following plan may be subject to change depending on students' ability and interests.

Students must read the texts and learn new vocabulary before class,and be prepared to ask questions and join discussions in class.
|

Students are required to use English in class and to participate actively. Credits will not be given to those who have missed more than one-third of all classes. Being late three times will be counted as one absence.
