Interactive English: Reception
The main aim of this course is to improve students’ listening skills through watching BBC news and perfomative documentary films from all over the world. This course also expects students to enhance their reading skills through skimming and scanning academic or newspaper articles related to the news and films. Through watching news, films, and reading articles, students should develop critical thinking skills in English and be able to compare their study areas with other areas.

This class will be mainly conducted in English. In the first half of the course, students will use the textbook “Seeing the World through the News 4”, based on BBC NEWS, to familiarise themselves with British current affairs.
In the latter half, students will watch a variety of dance and music documentary films from all over the world. This includes “ethnic” and “traditional” performances but also “hybrid” performances that combine both ethnic and contemporary/Western elements. Students will answer written questions regarding the films and discuss them in small groups, exchanging views with other students. We will also read articles about the performances covered in the films.
