This course is designed to improve your ability in listening and reading English. There is a secondary goal of improving your speaking and writing ability. The class will be primarily based on the prescribed textbook, which offers a comprehensive approach to the understanding and discussion in English of a variety of topics.
The focus of the class will be on enhancing understanding of the English language content of the topics presented in the textbook, to stimulate further thinking about the topics themselves, and to achieve the ability to express individual ideas and opinions on the particular topics. A series of discussion/debate tasks and occasional presentation tasks in class, and regular written assignments to be done outside the class, will also be given, for the purpose of deeper consolidation of the material and topic under consideration.
Classes will be conducted entirely in English on the part of the instructor, and in discourse between the instructor and students. Similarly, other than the occasional use of Japanese for purposes of confirming the meaning of English terms, students will be encouraged to acquire the habit of using English as a tool of communication between themselves.
