To develop speaking skills and learn to actively participate in discussions and debates on current issues. To develop writing skills and organize coherent compositions. To develop critical thinking and research skills through the study of current issues.

After covering textbook work, we will have debates in the next week. Students will do research in order to participate in debates.

The textbook provides basic vocabulary on current issues as well as useful expressions to build persuasive arguments. After covering textbook work, adapting activities to the students’ level, we will have small-group discussions and debates in the next week. Students will do research in order to participate in debates. Other than the topics covered in the textbook, students will have opportunities to choose issues to debate. Afterwards students will learn how to write essays on topics discussed in class. There will be presentations and poster sessions on issues students are most interested in twice during the semester.

Evaluation will be based on active participation in class (40%, includes completion of homework), writing assignments (20%), poster sessions (20%), peer evaluation based on presentations in groups (10%), ELC assignments (10%).

All communication conducted in class will be in English. Arriving late three times will be counted as one absence. Persons 30 minutes or more late will be considered absent.
