授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
The goal of this course is to learn and practise useful language and skills for expressing your ideas in speech and in writing, and to study useful techniques for persuasive and successful debating and presentations. Students will expand their vocabulary, learn different communication and writing strategies, and improve their ability to understand spoken English. Students will also learn how to research and plan simple projects.

Overview of the course   
The course will combine speaking and writing practice in each class. During this semster, students will work on two different essays.

Plan   
You will practise note taking, summarising, and writing skills and to complete two different short essay projects. We will revise and explore key writing skills and study some effective research and essay writing strategies.
Week 1: a) Course requirements. b) Writing a story based on an interview.
Week 2: Different genres of writing: pair work.
Week 3: Short group writing project.
Week 4: Writing coherent paragraphs: topic sentences and supporting sentences.
Week 5: a) Linking ideas within paragraphs and paragraphs within essays. b) Thesis statements.
Week 6: a) Planning essays: introduction, body, conclusion. b) Describing cause & effect; brainstorming project topics.
Week 7: a) Research & essay project 1 (week 1): discussing topics, making mind-maps. b) Developing strong thesis statements.
Week 8: a) Research & essay project 1 (week 2): explaining research notes. b) Planning essays.
Week 9: a) Research & essay project 1 (week 3): introductions and conclusions. b) Editing tips.
Week 10: a) Submitting essay 1. b) Research & essay project 2 (week 1) – what is an argumentative essay? Persuasive speaking vs. persuasive writing.
Week 11: a) Research & essay project 2 (week 2) – discussing topics. b) Pre-writing strategies and mind-maps.
Week 12: a) Research & essay project 2 (week 3) – explaining research notes in groups. b) Debatable thesis statements.
Week 13: a) Research & essay project 2 (week 4) – explaining research notes in groups. b) Quoting and paraphrasing.
Week 14: Research & essay project 2 (final week) – writing essays in class.
Week 15: Course revision.
 
成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
Contribution to in-class activities 40%; homework (assignments, projects and essays) 50%; ELC assignments 10%.
 
事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
 
Preview/review   
Students will have to read some articles on their research topics, prepare research notes, plan out and write essays. For Active Learning students will have to work with some self-study English websites (watching, listening and reading) - the plan and the contents will be explained by the teacher in class.

Notes   
All communication conducted in class will be in English. Punctuality is essential.
