The objective of the class is to improve the students’ speaking skills by having them learning the speaking rules and developing their ability to express their thoughts with more refined speaking sound. The ability to speak only grammatically correct English spontaneously is not sufficient for communicating effectively with English speakers of the world. For that, one needs to make English-speaking sound more understandable to anyone in the world by speaking with correct rhythm, right intonation, proper pronunciation, and good sentences. So, it is vitally important that students learn these elements besides making grammatically correct sentences in order to advance their speaking skills.
Toward the above goals of this course, students will gain knowledge and develop skills in the following three areas: 1) English rhythm and sound based on English phonetics and phonology 2) Reading aloud previously unknown words based on pronunciation marks with correct English rhythm and sound 3) Speaking grammatically correct English spontaneously with native- like sound These skills will be acquired through discussions, shadowing, presentations, writing assignments, and oral presentations. The students will further learn invisible speech rhythm and intonation through simple musical presentations, which helps them to apprehend the intangible speech sounds.

1. As materials for learning to express one’s thoughts by speaking and writing, we will be using, 1) a textbook on cross-cultural differences between Japan and the United States, 2) inspiring commencement speeches, and 3) articles on socially-engaged Harvard University graduates.
2. In order to attain good English rhythm and pronunciation in actual speech, we will be using an internationally well-known children’s story that is simple enough for applying the theory of good rhythm and sound. Students are asked to review and practice shadowing by watching a YouTube video.
3. For active learning, students are asked to do work on You Tube videos.
4.Students are asked to read and write about the reading materials before they come to the weekly class discussion.
5.Students will give presentations based on commencement speeches delivered at Harvard University and Stanford University.
6. Students will learn Basic English phonetics and phonology throughout the year. Invisible speech rhythm and intonation will be visualized by very simple musical presentations. This will help students to apprehend the intangible speech sound.
7. Students will learn how to improve their pronunciation by reading pronunciation marks more effectively with greater knowledge.
