The main goals of the course are to: 1) Develop you ability to understand English news 2) Analyse and discuss the content of some inspirational speeches 3) Reflect on the nature and causes of a variety of social problems 4) Become more familiar with the vocabulary and expressions commonly used in the English media 5) Develop your ability to actively participate in small group discussions of current issues 6) Develop your academic writing skills

In this course you will view some inspirational speeches, NHK news items, and documentaries on social issues, write and discuss short reports, and compose two reaction papers/short essays. The focus will be on the analysis and discussion of a variety of issues in the media, and on developing your ability to understand and use the words and expressions commonly employed in the discussion of current issues. The course will culminate with each student leading a group discussion on a current issue of his or her choice.

Your grade will be determined in the following manner: Attendance, Participation, and Use of English: 30% Completion of Reviews and Summaries: 20% Reaction Papers: 10% Student-led Discussions: 30% ELC Actvities: 10%

To get a good grade in this course, weekly attendance, homework completion, and class participation are essential.

Students are expected to speak only English in class.
