The course has the double objective of offering students a consistent and self-contained topic of study and of doing so by exposing them to lectures and material in Turkish. It has the addition advantage of addressing a topic that is very central to the understanding some of the most fundamental elements of Ottoman and Turkish culture.

The course will concentrate on the birth and development of funerary culture and practice among the Islamic population and elite of the Ottoman Empire up to its final transformation during the Republican period. Particular attention will be given to the interplay between the Islamic tradition, Ottoman innovations, and, eventually, Western influences during this five-century long process.
