This course requires a high level of autonomy from the students.
The class will be based on weekly current affairs topics, which will provide a means to build understanding and group/class discussion in English on a variety of subjects.
The focus of the class will be on enhancing understanding of the English language content of the topics presented, to stimulate further thinking about the topics themselves, and to achieve the ability to express complex ideas and opinions on the particular topics. A series of discussion/debate/presentation tasks in class and regular written assignments to be done outside the class will also be given, for the purpose of deeper consolidation of the communication skills.
Classes will be conducted entirely in English on the part of the instructor, and in discourse between the instructor and students. Similarly, other than the occasional use of Japanese for purposes of confirming the meaning of English terms, students will be required to acquire the habit of using English as a tool of communication among themselves.
