ジョン・ミリングトン・シング（1871-1909）は、ウィリアム・バトラー・イェイツ、グレゴリー夫人と共に、１９世紀末から２０世紀初頭にかけてアイルランド文芸復興に重要な役割を果たした。シングは、アイルランド語の統語法を取り入れた独特の詩的な英語表現を創造した。また劇の筋立てには、フォークロアの要素とリアリズムの融合が伺える。シングの想像力豊かな言語表現について学ぶとともに、言語と文化的アイデンティティの問題についても考察することを目標とする。

John Millington Synge (1871-1909), together with William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory, made a significant contribution to the Irish Renaissance in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Synge developed his own poetic form of English, which also had syntactic features of Irish. In addition, the plots of his plays combine elements of folklore with realism. The aim of the course is for students to develop their critical reading skills, enabling them to appreciate the dramatic imagination of J. M. Synge, and to gain an understanding of the relationship between languages and cultural identities.

ジョン・ミリングトン・シングの劇『聖者の泉』を読み、テーマ及び表現方法について分析する。テクスト分析を通じて、アイルランドの演劇運動にシングが果たした役割及びアイルランド文芸復興の意義について考察する。シングの戯曲は現代でも上演される重要な作品であり、本戯曲の舞台化の例としてDVDも参照しながら、舞台表現のあり方についても理解を深める。

Students should read and analyze the text, themes and dramatic techniques of J. M. Synge's The Well of the Saints. Based upon their textual analysis, students should discuss the role of J. M. Synge in the Irish dramatic movement and the significance of the Irish Renaissance. Synge's plays are of great importance and relevance to the modern stage as well. By viewing DVD versions of his plays, students will gain a deeper understanding of the dramatization of his works.
